‘White Victim of a   City's Racists’

The 76 year-old widow has tears in her eyes as she recounts endless sleepless nights listening to Asian teenagers kicking her front door, throwing things at her windows and hurling abuse, some of it racial. 

Hers is a story about racial intolerance that many black and Asian racism victims will already be familiar with. The only difference is Mrs Smith is white. 

She is frail, but her mental faculties are as good as when she was in the ATS in the 1940's. 

She said: "If I go out to the shops or take the dog out they come up behind me and shout things like 'effing white bitch.' I just stand there trembling because nobody comes to my aid." 

At weekends Mrs Smith looks forward to seeing her grandchildren, her only source of comfort. 

"These lads are in their 20's and frighten me to death. The police told me they have nothing to do but torment people." 

Mrs Smith, a mill worker all her life, lives alone in a council bungalow in an area of Bradford where the majority of the population is Asian, some of whom she counts as friends. 

During darkness her home becomes a virtual fortress against the youths who seem determined to frighten her into an early grave. 

"My life is a complete hell. I can't eat, and I can't sleep with the worry. The police can't be here all the time. When they arrive the lads just run off." 

Mrs Smith says elderly Asian neighbours are left to go about their daily routine but white women like her are targeted. "They mimic how I walk and call me a white old bastard. I can't help being white." 

Her dream is to move away from inner-city Bradford into an area where she can live in peace. "I've phoned the vet to ask about putting my pets down - then I can go anywhere," she says, looking at her little dog sadly. 

At the end of the interview with the Yorkshire Post, Mrs Smith starts to cry and hugs the reporter and thanks him for listening. I've had so much abuse and no-one has listened to me." 

Her neighbours tell a similar story of rubbish being pushed through letterboxes and graffiti sprayed on walls. 

She is not the only white person to experience racism in Bradford. 

One professional woman in her 50s, who asked not to be named, said: "I live amongst Asians and we have a great relationship. But a certain age group doesn't like 'white bitches' like me and they say so. Thankfully, the abuse only happens occasionally." 

West Yorkshire Police yesterday acknowledged that racism towards whites was a long-standing problem. 

A spokesman said: "Ever since 1986 when racial incidents were first recorded as a separate crime category there have been white victims. It is not a new phenomenon." 

Over the past five years in West Yorkshire white victims have accounted for between 25 and 35 percent of all victims of racial crime. The most recent figures (1997-98) show that 30 percent of victims were white. 

The police spokesman added: "However, the makeup of the population in West Yorkshire is such that a person from a minority ethnic background is 26 times more likely to be the victim of a racially-motivated incident than a white person. 

"All racial incidents are abhorrent and West Yorkshire Police is committed to a thorough investigation of such crime whatever the ethnicity of the victim." 

But Bradford Racial Equality Council said the police statistics did not paint a true picture. 

A spokesman said: "In the last 52 cases of racial incidents I cannot find one white victim. We are very angry about these figures. Most of our victims are Asian, not white." 

National figures show that the vast majority of racism victims are from ethnic minorities, but police statistics for Bradford appear to show this city is different. 

This shocking report was evidently not welcomed by the local Bradford newspaper, the Telegraph and Argus, which likes to portray ethnic minorities as the exclusive victims of racial attacks. Instead of reporting something that the white population have known about for years, the paper completely ignored the report, unlike the Yorkshire Post which featured it on its front page. 

The statistics show that in Bradford 52 percent of victims of racial incidents were white; 29 percent Pakistani; 9 percent black; 4 percent Indian and 2 percent Bangladeshi. Analysis of those suspected of being behind the racial incidents revealed that 50 percent were Asian; 37 percent white; 2 percent black and 11 percent of the perpetrators were unknown. The figures, based on police interviews with victims, are contained in a report, 'Crime and Disorder Audit 1998,' compiled by Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police. 

Yet, the majority of people living in the inner-city area of Bradford where the attacks took place are Asian and mainly Muslim. The report shows that they are many times more likely to commit racial attacks than Whites. 

Considering that much of what ethnic minorities report as "harassment" a white person would just shrug off, the figures show just how bad the situation really is. 

This commentator does not recommend waiting for an outcry from the 'race relations industry' about these findings. It is doubtful that we'll see much, if anything, in the media about racial attacks on whites, and it will certainly never match the recent coverage of the Steven Lawrence case. 

The reason Bradford Asians believe they are above the law is a consequence of an insane police policy. Ever since the Bradford Riots of 1995, when thousands of Asians took to the streets petrol-bombing white shops and cars while police looked on, similar incidents have occurred, most notably the riots in July 2001. Although the police, due to public pressure, have attempted to apprehend the rioters, progress is slow. The riots of 7th/8th July in the city have proved that the police policy of treating Asians with kid gloves has done nothing but increase racial tension, because whites are embittered that if they step out of line they find themselves in jail while Asians laugh at the law and the police bend over backwards to kiss their backsides. But that's what the State want, whites arrested for rioting in order to make the dim-witted public believe that it's an equal Asian/white problem.
